Vietnam Syndrome
The Vietnam syndrome is an expression used to describe how Americans feel about going to war after the Vietnam War said to have been disastrous. This expression immerged in the United States as the result of conservatives beliefs that the war could have been won. It was also due to the fear of Americans of entering future wars and not achieving their political goals and reliving the casualties of the Vietnam War.
President George Bush had announced, fifteen years after the Saigon episode “By God, we've kicked the Vietnam syndrome once and for all!" after the end of the Gulf War.
The expression “Vietnam syndrome”, is also used to describe the aftermath of Agent Orange.
Agent Orange was an herbicide used by the U.S military to get rid of vegetation in which enemies could take cover. It was also used to reduce communist’s crops used for subsistence. The herbicide contained dioxins which acted as environmental pollutants. This chemical affected and poisoned their food chain. It also caused genetic diseases for future generations. Agent Orange has caused 400,000 deaths and disabilities as well as 500,000 children born with birth defects.
